German Chocolate Cake Recipe

This is the best German Chocolate Cake Recipe I have ever made. It is an Old Family Favorite.

German Chocolate Cake Recipe:

1 pkg [4oz] sweet German Chocolate
1/2 c water
1c soft butter
2 c sugar
4 eggs, separated
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c cake flour + 1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 c buttermilk

1-- Prepare 3 9" round pans with cooking spray. In a small saucepan, melt chocolate with water over low heat and cool.
2-- In a lge mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy and light. Beat in egg yolks, one at a time, blending well after each addition. Blend in chocolate and vanilla.
3-- Combine flour and other dry ingredients together, then, add to creamed
mixture alternately with buttermilk. Beating well after each addition.
4-- In a small mixing bowl, beat 4 egg whites to peaks form. [Use clean beaters.]
Fold into creamed mixture, 1/4 th at a time and blend well after each addition.
5-- Pour into pans. Bake @ 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until toothpick comes out of center of cake clean. Cool cake 10 minutes on wire rack and remove from pans to cool completely.

FROSTING:

1 cup sugar 1 c evaporated milk 1/2 c milk 1 tsp vanilla
1 1/3 c coconut 1c pecans 1 sq semi-sweet chocolate 1/2 tsp. shortening
1-- In small saucepan, heat sugar, milk, butter and egg yolks over med-low heat 'til thick and brown. Stir constantly. Remove from heat.
2--Stir in coconut , pecans and vanilla. Cool to thick enough to spread.
Spread 1/3 of this mixture over cake layers. Melt chocolate and shortening and drizzle over sides.
Serves: 12

Inthe german chocolate cake icing, how much butter and how many egg yolks? Will let you know how turned out.

Kathy - thanks for pointing this out to me. I forgot to put these amts in.
That would 2 egg yolks and 2 Tbsps butter.

hi...at the end of the recipe, you stated to melt chocolate and butter to drizzle. How much of each do we need?
Also, I just completed everything but the icing... my first try at it did not fair well. I added the vanilla to the mixture while it was heating together. The mixture did not thicken. I supose it was due to adding the vanilla to soon?

Hi Again..

Question... the picture of the cake that you posted along with the recipe has 4 layers. I just noticed that. However, the recipe that you provided calls for 3 layers. Was this a random picture, or was it a typographical error stating 3 layers as opposed to 4?
Either way, I am sure it will be wonderful.
